The 27th Annual Women's Summit®, held March 14, focused on the theme of “Passion, Purpose, Power, and Potential,” with Bryant's Emily Tetraut sharing the story of how she faced health challenges. We held a morning breakout session on how to sometimes reshape your dreams. Tetraut, an adjunct professor of biology and biomedical sciences, academic lab manager, and chemical hygienist, will share with participants his own journey with chronic illness and the ongoing challenges he faces. She offered what she called “gentle advice” on how to find inner strength while doing so. She shares three of her top tips.
1. Pinpoint your purpose
When we are struggling with health conditions, trauma, or circumstances beyond our control, it can feel like we will never get over this moment, or that the problem may change us forever. While these challenges can be daunting, Tetrau noted the importance of finding purpose.
“For me, it's always about getting to the root purpose of what you love and finding a way to make it tangible,” Tetraut said.
2. Share your pain and offer a helping hand.
When you feel physical or emotional pain, it can be difficult not to get lost in the pain. Grief is an important part of dealing with health challenges, but it's important not to stay in a negative headspace.
“I learned that if you get stuck, get up and go help someone,” Tetrau said, adding that individuals should respect their own limitations while also serving the community or doing something productive. suggested.
3. Find your sun
When the bad seems to outweigh the good, Tetrau suggests finding moments of happiness and holding on.
“Look for where you can find little nuggets of joy and adventure,” Tetrau said, noting that this could include time to read a book or go for a walk.
