Colorado could see its biggest snowstorm of the season in the Denver metropolitan area this week, forecasters say.
Snow is expected to start falling in Utah late Tuesday, then spread south and east into Arizona, southern Wyoming and Colorado into Wednesday, AccuWeather said.
“We can expect 6 to 12 inches of snow to fall over a wide area later in the week,” said AccuWeather meteorologist Renee Duff.

“For Denver, the heaviest snowfall is in the foothills west of downtown and the Palmer Watershed south of the city, but the metro area can see anywhere from 6 to 12 inches,” said Weather.com meteorologist Chris Dolce. There is a possibility of snowfall.” ”
The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for the Denver area, which will go into effect at noon Wednesday and last through Friday morning. The Bureau of Meteorology said “travel could be very difficult or impossible” as roads are expected to be covered in snow. Tuesday's map released by the National Weather Service shows the area could see 12 to 18 inches of snow.
“If you must travel, keep extra flashlights, food and water in your car in case of an emergency,” the Bureau of Meteorology advises.
Additionally, Duff warned, “Snow from this storm is expected to be wet, heavy and sticky, potentially causing power outages and downed trees, especially in areas where more than a foot of snow accumulates.”
The snowstorm could also impact the airline's main hub, Denver International Airport, with possible flight cancellations and delays on both Wednesday and Thursday.
Snow in March is not uncommon in Denver.
Dolce said March is one of the snowiest months of the year in the Rocky Mountains, “in many places in eastern Colorado, northern New Mexico, Wyoming, and parts of neighboring states. “March is either the snowiest month of the year or the second snowiest month of the year.” to Alaska-based climatologist Brian Brettschneider. ”
Thursday also marks the third year since Denver last officially experienced a double-digit snowstorm, according to 9NEWS Weather Report. According to the National Weather Service, 19.9 inches of snow fell in Denver on that day in 2021, making it the city's snowiest March on record.
