The Duke of Sussex is expected to travel to the UK “in the coming days” to visit King Charles, the BBC understands, after Buckingham Palace announced the monarch had been diagnosed with cancer.
A spokesperson for Prince Harry said that he had spoken to his father about the diagnosis.
The duke moved to the United States with his wife, Duchess Meghan, after stepping down as senior royal in 2020.
Since then, his relationship with other members of the royal family has been strained.
A spokeswoman said Meghan would remain in the United States with her two children.
The last time the Duke attended a royal event was during the King's coronation in May.
It was short-lived, however, as Prince Harry exited the ceremony at Westminster Abbey shortly after.
The BBC understands he was not invited to appear on the balcony of Buckingham Palace after the ceremony.
A source also told US media outlet Page Six at the time that Prince Harry would make “every effort” to arrive in time for his son Archie's birthday, which was on the same day.
King Charles' cancer diagnosis
Most recently, the Duke traveled to the UK to attend a libel case involving a British newspaper.
Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan have spoken about their royal lives and their disagreements with other members of the royal family in their memoir Spare, an interview with Oprah Winfrey, and a Netflix documentary.
The prince told Winfrey that King Charles stopped answering his phone calls when they were trying to discuss stepping down as a working royal.
Prince Harry also recalled how, after the funeral of the king's father, Prince Philip, the king begged his sons: “Please, don't make my last years miserable.”
The palace said the king called Prince Harry to update him on his health.
He also informed the heir to the throne, the Prince of Wales, and the king's siblings, including the Princess Royal, Princess Anne, and the Crown Princess. Prince Andrew, Duke of York. and Prince Edward, Duke of Edinburgh.
