This week, the Seattle Public School District's local education foundation, the Alliance for Education, is inviting parents and others in the Seattle community to recognize principals, educators, A call was made to recommend a counselor. Excellence, the Philip B. Swain Excellence in Education Award, and the Adrienne Weaver Science Teaching Award.
Winners will each receive a $67,500 grant, and the funds will support their school community. Nominations can be made by anyone in the community, including students, school staff, parents, and community members.
Recognizing those who advance justice and equity
Since 1999, Alliance for Education endowed awards have provided school staff with additional funding outside of traditional school budgets to recognize excellence and enhance support for students, classrooms, and schools. . Here's what each award means and what the winners will receive:
- Thomas B. Foster Award for Excellence each year recognizes two principals who have contributed more than three years to their school with a $25,000 grant and a surprise celebration. This award commemorates Thomas B. Foster, a prominent Seattle attorney who demonstrated a strong personal commitment to public education.
- Philip B. Swain Excellence in Teaching Award Recognizes five 6th through 12th grade teachers and/or counselors who have served a Title I school for at least three years with an award that includes a $2,500 grant. This award honors former teacher Philip B. Swain, who was a passionate advocate for public education.
- Adrian Weaver Science Education Award Recognizes science educators who have worked in Title I schools for three or more years and teach kindergarten through eighth grade. The award includes a $5,000 grant for him. This honors Ms. Adrian Weaver, a former educator who loved education and science and believed in hands-on learning.
