whirlpools that cause rain or snow
There is a significant unstable vortex in the middle of the atmosphere moving through that region that will resolve early tomorrow. Vorticity can be thought of as a rotating eddy in the atmosphere, much like the eddies found in streams and rivers. This changes the flow of the entire atmosphere, which was flowing gently, and begins to stir. When the sun shines, even for a short time, it's the icing on the cake, seeping into the atmosphere and bringing warm air up from the ground and into this untapped space above us.
These ingredients can revitalize the atmosphere. These disturbed areas often contain cold air aloft, so as clouds develop, precipitation can also occur. As today, the temperature difference between the ground and the clouds is amplified by vorticity and can produce frozen precipitation (gravel-like snow particles) even when temperatures are near or slightly above 50 degrees.
