Baseball and women's lacrosse win

As the long winter sports season comes to an end and spring sports begin, Durango High School student-athletes are once again seeing the light of day.
Baseball, women's lacrosse and women's soccer each began their seasons with multiple games over the weekend.
After winning his first game as Durango baseball head coach on Friday, Austin Anderson picked up another win with a 14-1 win over Page High School on Saturday afternoon at Aztec High School. The Demons improved to 2-0 on the season.
Junior Jack England had a great day leading the Demons. He batted 4-for-4 with two runs scored, a home run and four RBIs. Sophomore Dawson Maclins also had three hits and scored two runs. Sophomore Austin Romero also had a hit with two RBIs and a home run.
Senior Ian Zula pitched five innings, had nine strikeouts and allowed just one hit.
The Demons had a good start in the first inning, taking a 2-0 lead. After finishing the second inning scoreless, the Demons added one run in the third and fourth innings and entered the fifth inning with a 4-0 lead. Durango then exploded with 10 points and Page scored one, and the Demons finished the game 14-1 after the fifth.
Durango played the Aztecs on Saturday afternoon, but results were not available at press time.
Women's soccer:
The Demons girls soccer team didn't get off to the best start, losing 3-0 to Cherry Creek on Friday and tying Ralston Valley 1-1 on Saturday to start the season with an 0-1 record. .
In the game against Cherry Creek, the Demons trailed 2-0 in the first half, but Cherry Creek scored a goal in the second half to secure the victory over Durango.
Sophomore goalie Ryne Niemann finished the game with 14 saves for the Demons.
On Saturday, Ralston Valley scored the first goal and led 1-0 at halftime. But in the second half, senior Sarah Somlak scored a goal and an assist from senior Carter Niemann tied the score. Line Niemann finished the game with 20 saves.
The Demons return to action next Thursday at Legends.
Women's lacrosse:
The Durango girls lacrosse team opened its season Friday with a thrilling 14-12 victory over Summit. Individual stats were not available from the Demons at the time of this writing.
Unfortunately, Durango fell short in a close game on Saturday, losing 9-8 to Aspen. Individual statistics were not available at the time of writing.
Durango returns to action Thursday at home against Telluride.
