In its first season of conference membership, Houston won the 2023-24 Big 12 men's basketball regular-season title and will host the Phillips 66 Big 12 from March 12-16 at T-Mobile Center in Kansas City. They earned the top seed in the men's basketball championship.
The Cougars, ranked No. 1 nationally, won the regular season by two games and finished with a record of 15 wins and three losses. Heading into the postseason, UH has won nine straight games and is 28-3 overall. Houston is also a top-ranked team in the NET, Ken Pom, and ESPN Power Index metrics. The Cougars are undefeated at home this year at 17-0 and are currently 5-1 against Top 25 opponents. This is the second Big 12 regular season title for Houston coach Kelvin Sampson, who won a share of the championship in 2004-05 when he was Oklahoma's head coach.
Iowa State earned the No. 2 seed for the championship, followed by No. 3 Baylor University and No. 4 Texas Tech. The top four seeds will receive double byes and begin play in the quarterfinals on Thursday, March 14th. The next top six seeds are No. 5 BYU, No. 6 Kansas, No. 7 Texas, No. 8 TCU and No. 9 Oklahoma. and 10th place Kansas State University. They received a bye in the first round and will begin play on Wednesday, March 13th.
The two first-round games on Tuesday, March 12 will feature No. 12 UCF vs. No. 13 Oklahoma State at 11:30 a.m. CT, followed by No. 11 Cincinnati vs. No. 14 West Virginia at 2 p.m. CT. ).
