Herriman –– There’s nothing wrong with celebrating your city’s past.
In Herriman, the covered wagon logo is still printed on some of the telephone poles outside Old City Hall.
But there are also many people here who are looking to the future.
“This is a great day,” said Todd Madsen, director of the new Columbus Adult Education Center. “We’re excited to be a part of it because we’re going to see life change after life change.”
The school's grand opening was held Saturday afternoon in the old Herriman City Hall building.
Purpose of the Education Center
This is a school designed to help people not only learn better English, but also work skills, continuing education classes, citizenship classes, and all kinds of tutoring that people need to become more independent. is.
This is especially helpful for those visiting the United States for the first time.
“This is a non-political place,” Madsen said. “This is not about what's happening thousands of miles away or on a border wall. This is about the community we love, embracing the people here and giving them the best opportunities.” It’s something to give.”
James Lin knows how important this type of school is.
He moved to Salt Lake City from Taiwan five years ago and had trouble communicating with doctors after a car accident.
“The doctor's words came so fast, so fast, it was very difficult to understand,” Lin said.
He took English classes at another school in Columbus to better integrate into American culture.
“You will feel like you belong to this city,” he said. “Columbus helped me gain confidence.”
Perfect for growing cities
180 students have already registered and about 300 are on the waiting list.
We also have over 100 volunteers who want to help students feel welcome.
Herriman Mayor Lorin Palmer said the school is a great fit for the growing city.
“I think what helps growth the most is trying to maintain that unity and closeness as we serve together. I think that’s how communities maintain close relationships and work together.” I think so,” Palmer said.
Students can take classes for free, and the schedule has already been expanded to help more people.
Lin feels more American because of the class.
“I’m very happy,” he said.
