Deworst, Minnesota — Nine people were killed Friday in a crash between a semi and a van on Interstate 95 in west-central Wisconsin.
The fatal crash happened on the highway near County Road J in Dewhurst Township, about 80 miles east of Eau Claire, according to the Clark County Sheriff's Office. The crash was reported at 7:53 a.m. Friday morning.
According to the sheriff's office, the van continued northbound on County Road and entered the intersection with Route 95. At that time, a semi traveling eastbound on the highway collided with the van.
Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers lamented the accident in a recent post about the X, thanking first responders and confirming nine deaths.
According to authorities, nine people died in the accident. Coroner Clarissa Rochester pronounced the semi driver dead at the scene. There were nine people in the van, eight of whom were pronounced dead at the scene, including the driver. One passenger in the van survived and was taken to St. Joseph Hospital. The Wisconsin State Patrol is assisting with the investigation.
That section of Highway 95 was closed for several hours Friday, and motorists were asked to avoid the area. The accident has been resolved and Highway 95 and Highway J have been reopened. The names of all those involved have not yet been released.
