Alexander Mitchell, a second-year graduate student in the Department of Health, Human Performance and Recreation in the College of Education and Health, has been selected to attend the NCAA Emerging Leaders Seminar.
The three-day event was held in February at the organization's national office and hosted interns and graduate assistants from NCAA member schools.
The NCAA hosts the seminar annually with the goal of connecting emerging leaders through leadership, education and transition programs, according to a press release.
“Three days spent at NCAA Headquarters in Indianapolis were invaluable for my personal growth and deeper understanding of the fundamentals of leadership, networking, collaboration, and community that I can apply to my current job as an event management graduate. It was enlightening and impactful for me in my future work as an assistant and senior administrator in college athletics,” Mitchell said.
Those selected to attend the seminar will benefit from interactive presentations from industry experts and NCAA national executives. Several breakout groups and panels allow attendees to make connections and explore career paths in the collegiate athletics industry.
Mitchell College participates in the ONE Razorback Pathway, a rotating graduate assistant program within Razorback Athletics that allows you to gain hands-on experience in the external and internal sections of collegiate sports.
Mitchell's plans to become a leader in his field include aspiring to become an associate athletic director or athletic director at a Division I-level institution. His strong passion for athletics led him to accept the role of event management graduate assistant for the Razorbacks.
“As an undergraduate student in the Recreation and Sports Management program and now a graduate student, Alex has consistently and intentionally sought out opportunities to engage with industry,” said Assistant Professor of Recreation and Sports Management・Program Coordinator Craig Schmidt said: “The courage to seek insight and the humility to listen has opened doors of opportunity for Alex as he continues to explore a career path in college athletics where he can have the greatest impact on the student-athlete experience. And it will continue to open.”
