DENVER (KDVR) — You nominated them. It's finally time to announce her 2024 Remarkable Women finalists.
Meet Elsa Holguin. She provides critical resources to her family who would otherwise be at risk of facing poverty.
“This is the best investment we can make financially. We will make the investment as early as possible,” Holguin said.
Holguin is the first face families in need see when they enroll their toddlers in kindergarten.
“This is what we call two-generation investing. You help the kids and you help the parents,” Holguin said.
Holguin immigrated to the United States from Mexico at the age of 17 and first worked as a janitor. Currently, she is her CEO of the Denver Preschool Program. With her help, 5,000 children a year receive the education they need.
“Our average tuition support last year was $850 a month for the entire year,” Holguin said.
A portion of Denver's sales tax goes toward paying for the program.
It's also a simple process. Families contact the Denver Preschool Program and are connected to an appropriate preschool nearby.
Holguin said he works hard to give back. She believes that poverty can be overcome by providing children with education from an early age.
“If we can provide support while these families are raising children, we can lift them out of poverty,” Holguin said.
Holguin does it all. She is passionate about her grandchildren, helping the Latinx community succeed in America, reading and Zumba.
“It opened some doors for me and I want us to do the same,” Holguin said.
Ms. Holguin gives of herself to others to make Denver and the world a better place for local families.
