Former darts commentator Tony Green, best known for his role on the TV show Bullseye, has died at the age of 85.
Bullseye creator Andrew Wood announced the death on Monday, saying Greene “passed away peacefully today after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.”
Green was a commentator for the BBC at the BDO World Championships from 1978 to 2016.
He was also widely known as the scorer and announcer on the long-running quiz show Bullseye, hosted by Jim Bowen on ITV from 1981 to 1995.
Mr Green's death was announced on the Bullseye Facebook page by Mr Wood and his family with “very heavy hearts”.
“Our love, thoughts and prayers go out to all of Tony's family, for whom we have deep affection, all of Tony's friends, and those who were lucky enough to work with him.” they said.
“Tony, thank you for all the memories, all the laughs (trust me there were a lot!), and all the special times we shot Bullseye together.
“What an amazing year it's been and I'm honored to share it with you.”
Two-time BDO finalist and long-time BBC commentator Bobby George was among a number of former players to express their sadness at Green's death.
George said: “I am so sorry and saddened to hear of Tony Green's passing. He was an excellent darts player, caller, commentator and an icon of the bullseye show.''
Keith Deller, who won the BDO title in 1983, described Green as “one of the great darts commentators”.
Philip Varney, interim director of BBC Sport, said Green was “a true legend”.
“He was a great commentator on the BBC for nearly 40 years, where his great warmth and generous personality always shined through. He made an outstanding contribution to the sport he loved,” Barney added.
