The Los Angeles Times staff has been awarded the prestigious Associated Press Sports Editor's Grand Slam award. The Grand Slam is a best-in-show award given to publications that place in the top 10 in four major contest categories.
The Times was the only publication to win the Grand Slam in the largest circulation category for works completed in 2023. This marks his fourth consecutive Grand Slam honor for the staff.
To secure the Grand Slam, The Times placed in the top 10 for print portfolio, digital, project and event coverage. In the digital category, The Times also won an honorable mention for video for its short documentary about Cade West, a deaf and autistic basketball player who inspired his coaches and teammates at Cerritos College. Eric Himmelsbach-Weinstein, Mark E. Potts, Cody Long and Bill Plaschke contributed to the video.
Overall, The Times finished in the top 10 in seven categories.
Ryan Kartje was honored in the Beatwriting category for his coverage of USC and in the Breaking News category for his work documenting the resignation of USC Athletic Director Mike Bohn.
Plaschke finished in the top 10 in the column for the 12th consecutive year and 21st overall.
The Times' coverage of the U.S. Open golf tournament held at the Los Angeles Country Club, including a hole-by-hole video preview using drone footage, was recognized in the project category. Entries for this project featured work by Sam Farmer, Potts, Himmelsbach Weinstein, Steve Henson, and Chris Stone.
The Times' coverage of the Dodgers-Diamondbacks loss in the NLDS was in the top 10 for event coverage. Jack Harris, Plaschke, Dylan Hernandez, Jorge Castillo, Mike DiGiovanna, Bill Shakin, Houston Mitchell, and Potts all contributed coverage entries for the event.
The order of placement in the individual writing category will be announced at a later date.
