Minneapolis (FOX 9) – From the televised sporting events to the memorabilia on the walls, it's clear that the city's newest bar is raising the bar for the local sports bar scene.
Women's basketball fan Jade Denson and her friends lined up to get into Bar of Their Own when it first opened Friday. The first of its kind in the Midwest, it did not disappoint.
“I was so overwhelmed when I walked in. I've wanted a space like this for a long time and I'm so excited to finally see it come to fruition. It's exhilarating. Overwhelming. Denson told FOX 9.
“I expected it to be busy, but there's no question about it. This has far exceeded my expectations,” said Jillian Hickok, owner of A Bar Of Their Own.
Lynette Shoquist traveled the United States playing for the All-American Redheads, the first women's professional basketball team, known as the female version of the Harlem Globetrotters.
She says a bar focused solely on women's sports is an idea whose time has come.
“People seem to be having a good time. You can watch TV and see women playing sports. What else do you want to do on a Saturday afternoon?” Shoquist said. Ta.
Judging by the excitement of customers on opening day, A Bar Of Their Own knocked it out of the park.
“There's no other place I can come with people who care about the sport I love as much as I do, so it's great to have a place where that's guaranteed,” Denson said.
