MINNEAPOLIS, MN — On Friday morning, a line along the building, bagpipes and a ceremonial first pitch welcomed A Bar of Their Own's first day open.
The new bar will feature a full range of women's sports at all times.
For many, it has been a long time coming.
“I've been playing hockey for about 12 years and I've had to beg to get ice time,” said Colleen Woodley, a St. Paul native.
Before lunchtime, people of all ages packed into the bar.
The Seward neighborhood watering hole occupies the space of the former Tracy's Saloon and Eatery.
“It's total madness, but in the best way possible,” owner Gillian Hickok said.
Hiscock said the sports bar she visited last year lacked space, and the goal was to create a space dedicated to women's sports and fans.
“I think people have been preparing for this for a long time and have been waiting for this, so it means a lot to have it here and have people inside,” Hiscock said. Ta.
It all comes in time for the Big Ten Women's Basketball Tournament in Minneapolis.
“This is unbelievable. I love the atmosphere and I'm so happy to finally have a place like this in Minnesota,” said Minnetonka resident Jamie Cooper.
It was a very popular place on Friday, and Hiscock and his staff had to really try to keep up with the people waiting outside for their turn.
“Our team has been busy preparing for it. We're doing our best to get everything done as quickly as possible, but it's really fun to have our guys here,” Hiscock said.
A Own Bar is open Wednesday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
