🏀 Clark's mixed feelings towards his son as he chases the pistol
Pete Maravich scores NCAA record 3,667 points In three seasons at LSU. With Caitlin Clark 50 points away from tying Pistol Pete with two regular season games left (tonight and Sunday), Yahoo Sports' Jeff Eisenberg speaks with his son Jason Maravich.
When Clark lost her late father, Jason hopes basketball fans appreciate what she accomplished. He describes Clark as a “tremendous talent” and “must-see TV.” “I support my girlfriend, and I'm happy if my girlfriend succeeds,'' he says sincerely.
However, Jason also resents the idea of Clark replacing his father as college basketball's legitimate career scorer. In Jason's view, these are “two completely separate records” achieved in very different ways.
Pete Maravich played in an era when freshmen were not yet eligible for varsity. 3 During his season, he averaged an unfathomable 44.2 points per game, even though he did not benefit from the clock or his 3-point line. In contrast, Clark averaged 28.3 points per game over three seasons at the University of Iowa. Maravich would need at least 128 games to match the number of points he recorded in 83 seasons.
The comparison becomes even more ambiguous when viewed through a different lens. Maravich took 38 shots per game for an LSU team that batted over .500 in all three seasons, but missed the NCAA Tournament. Clark has never taken 38 shots in a game and has averaged just under 20 shots per game throughout his career.
“It's hard to say it's really the same record because the circumstances are so different,” Jason said. “She doesn't want it to seem like I'm bashing her because I'm not like that. I just think it's an apples-to-oranges comparison.”
The last word: “I think my dad was a big fan of hers,” Jason said. “She's so much fun to watch.”

🏒 Sound the alarm in Winnipeg
winnipeg jets They are No. 1 in the Central and have the sixth-best record in the NHL. But off the ice, this franchise isn't doing so well.
Sound the alarm: With season ticket sales down and overall attendance low, there's growing talk that the Jets could face relocation (again) if things don't improve.
-
Season ticket sales have fallen 27% over three years, from about 13,000 to 9,500, team president Mark Chipman told The Athletic ($).
-
“We have to get back to 13,000,” Chipman said. “This situation we're in right now isn't going to work out in the long run. It's not going to work out.”
-
The Jets' attendance this season is just 87.4%, with an average attendance of 13,306, the lowest of any team other than the Coyotes who play in college arenas.
Stakes: The Jets left town once in 1996 when they moved to Phoenix. Losing the team again would likely mean the end of a major sport in Canada's sixth-largest city.
Bettman visits. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman was in Winnipeg on Tuesday and said the commissioner downplayed those concerns: “Hockey is important here in Winnipeg. We believe this is a strong NHL market.” “Obviously, attendance has to improve, but it will improve. I have confidence in the organization and … this community.”
🏀 What would happen if the NBA ditched the corner 3?
In the midst of the NBA's point explosion, The league's competition committee “has begun to formally consider whether the game is leaning too much toward offense and whether changes need to be made.”
I have one semi-serious idea. Move the 3 point line (see image above) to avoid corner 3. This is the easiest and most frequently performed jump shot in the NBA.
From ESPN's Kirk Goldsberry in 2019:
If you watch a recent game, you'll see that almost every team station has at least one, and often two, players in a far corner of the attacking chessboard.
They're just standing there waiting for a shot opportunity that doesn't usually come. That's why 20 to 40 percent of NBA offensive players spend most of their time just standing around picking dandelions, like Little League right fielders.
But unlike 10-year-old outfielders who have little impact on the game, these rooks impact most possessions even if they don't get noticed, by stretching the defense and preventing help defenders from coming to their aid. They accomplish all this by keeping their defense honest and standing still.
But is this interesting? Is it a good thing for the league to value two stationary shooting specialists so highly camped in the corners? Maybe no one knows.
But one thing's for sure: Other than dunks and layups, corner corner rooks produce the lowest points on the chessboard, and even looking at those numbers, there's not much in the league right now. There is little doubt that the team is chock-full of players who can hit high shots. The percentage is such that any team that doesn't have them on the floor every time would be crazy.
Additionally, the ability to make that shot is a must-have for nearly every off-ball player in the NBA. But would anyone go to an NBA arena to see them stopped in the corner?
⚽️Erling Haaland was born to score goals
erling haaland He scored five goals in Manchester City's 6-2 victory over Luton Town in the FA Cup fifth round on Tuesday.

🧊 Photo: Freediving under the ice
Valentina Caffola of Croatia On Saturday, he broke a world record for dynamic freediving by swimming 140 meters under the ice in the Italian Alps in one breath. Jeff writes.
dynamic freediving, Also known as competitive apnea, athletes must train their bodies to slow their heart rate and go without oxygen for long periods of time. Cafola jumped into the 37-degree water of Lake Anterselva in Bolzano, Italy, with one fin attached to his foot.
Cafola, 27 years old; She first set this record (125m) in 2017, and regained it just 36 hours after Japanese ozeki Yasuko momentarily broke it (126m).
I strongly recommend it: “The Deepest Breath” is a Netflix freediving documentary that doubles as a love story.
