AMES, Iowa (KCRG) – Several Iowa players charged with identity theft as part of the state's sports betting investigation on February 27 say they have obtained evidence against them. A petition was filed seeking destruction. “Unconstitutional” and “unfairly”
The Iowa Bureau of Criminal Investigation previously released the names of 25 student-athletes and former student-athletes who were indicted last year as part of a sports gambling investigation.
In a motion filed by lawyers for Eyoma Uwazurike, Isaiah Lee, Paniro Johnson and Gilaire Volk, they allege that the accusations are culpable. “As a result of an unlawful search conducted within a geofenced area of the Iowa State University football athletics facility.” The motion also says the players cooperated with officials under false promises of leniency.
Their lawyers previously told Special Agent Sanger that “…Unauthorized geofence will be installed around the dormitory of 1st and 2nd year students. to the University of Iowa to investigate underage gambling without any information, complaint, or evidence that underage gambling was occurring…'' The filing says Sanger used GeoFence software. “Without good reason.” He targeted this particular establishment by giving him access to see which online betting apps were being used. “Access to players, coaching staff and support staff will be limited.”
The Iowa Department of Public Safety previously said it believed it obtained the evidence in a “constitutionally permissible manner.”
