Mackenzie Campbell of Uniontown, Ohio, and Richard Hager of Sanford, both members of Campbell's Truist Business Scholars Program, received a $2,500 prize.
This is the fourth time Mr. Campbell has won first place in Templeton's Business Case Ethics Competition in the last 7 years. The teams competed with his 20 minute presentation followed by his 5 minute question format. Semi-finalists were chosen from each of her four groups and competed for the top spot in short eight-minute presentations.
The case involved a fictional university struggling with how to protect its students after two recent overdose deaths on campus. The team, which acted as consultants hired by the university, was directed to consider the financial, legal and ethical considerations and strategies for students when the university supplies naloxone and other harm reduction supplies to students. It was done. U.S. public health data shows a dramatic increase in overdose deaths, largely due to the rise in synthetic opioids such as fentanyl. The Campbell team's position was that universities should provide students with access to Narcan and fentanyl test strips across campus. Many studies have shown that such harm reduction strategies do not cause increased drug use and actually lead users to recovery.
“This case was unique in that it forced college students to respond to a real-life tragedy occurring on college campuses across the country,” said Dr. Mark A. Steckbeck, who coached the team in the competition. said. “Mackenzie and Richard have put together a compelling argument for why universities should act to protect students from the deadly cost of poor judgment.”
Campbell, a first-year student, said:This challenge allowed me to analyze problems from an ethical perspective and develop my critical thinking and public speaking skills. Winning the competition was a great start to my undergraduate career. My memories with Campbell are something I will treasure forever. ”
Hager, also a first-year student, said, “This competition provided a great opportunity to learn more about ethically evaluating business practices, presenting in front of an audience, and developing reasoning skills. It was a great experience.”
Other teams participating in this year's competition include Penn State University, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, U.S. Naval Academy, University of Florida; Iowa State University, University of Massachusetts Amherst and Boston College.
