Vance called for the United States to emulate the approach of Hungarian strongman Viktor Orbán, who controls Hungarian universities through a public foundation made up of Orbán's supporters.
Ohio-based U.S. Sen. J.D. Vance has called for a takeover of universities across the country to control what is taught in college classrooms.
According to an interview published in a European conservative newspaper, Vance urged the United States to emulate the approach of Hungarian strongman Viktor Orbán, who controls Hungarian universities through a public foundation made up of Orbán's supporters. I asked for it.
Mr. Vance was quoted as saying that this was “the closest conservatives have ever come to successfully dealing with left-wing control of universities.”
But another publication, Inside Higher Education, whose editor and co-founder Doug Liederman told 21 News that discussing all ideas is key to teaching students critical thinking. He counterattacked by saying.
“Part of higher education is challenging people's perspectives,” Lederman said.
Lederman also said this is important because it allows students to think and speak for themselves, allowing them to grow intellectually.
“We see evidence that conservative students in particular are more concerned about saying what they think because they fear it will make other students sad about their opinions,” Lederman said.
21 News reached out to Sen. Vance for comment, but did not receive a response.
