A jogger was found dead on the University of Georgia campus Thursday with “visible injuries,” officials said.
Foul play is suspected in the death in Athens, the university said in a statement.
Police did not release additional details, including the suspected cause of death, citing an active investigation.
“We do not have any suspects, but we are actively investigating this incident,” University of Georgia Police Chief Jeffrey Clark said in a statement.
Clark said the woman did not attend the University of Georgia, but was a student at another university. He did not reveal the name of the school.
According to police, around noon, someone reported that a friend had gone for a morning run at the intramural sports field on campus and had not returned.
Clark said the woman's body was found in a wooded area behind Herrick Lake at 12:38 p.m. with visible injuries.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is assisting university police, according to state law enforcement. Athens-Clarke County Police Department is also assisting.
The university called it a “terrible situation” in a message to the campus community, which includes more than 40,000 students.
The university said all classes were canceled Thursday night and Friday. They plan to reopen on Monday.
Clark said the 760-acre campus in Athens is equipped with surveillance cameras.
Clark said there hasn't been a murder on campus in at least 20 years.
