Online students ages 12-17 require in-person field courses
Miles City – Two free in-person hunter education courses with field days will be offered in Miles City in March and April. There is also an option to take courses online, but there is a fee. Students ages 12 to 17 who take the online course will also need an in-person field day to earn their hunting certification. This year, his two field days for online students will be held in Miles City. Adults taking courses online do not require an in-person field day.
Who needs hunter education?
To purchase or apply for a Montana hunting license, anyone born after January 1, 1985 must complete a hunter education course issued by the State of Montana, another state, or a Canadian province.

During in-person field days for online students, participants receive instruction, practice, and demonstrate skills and knowledge in two important areas: firearm safety and hunting ethics. Instructors provide hands-on instruction and present realistic scenarios to assess students' understanding and abilities. All hands-on firearms training is conducted using a variety of inert firearms. Topics covered include firearm safety, hunting ethics and responsibility, game processing, marksmanship, hunting planning/survival, wildlife management, and more. The instructor will determine pass/fail based on the student's overall performance. Students who fail a field day must pass a future field day to receive certification.
