OWENSBORO, Ky. (WFIE) – Detailed plans for a downtown sports facility were presented to the public at Tuesday's Owensboro City Commission meeting.
Plans have been in the works for more than a year to build the facility in space at the corner of Third and Cedar streets.
Deputy City Manager Leelan Hancock said Tuesday that building the facility is an opportunity to bring people to Owensboro.
“Our goal is to host and attract all kinds of tournaments, including basketball, volleyball, pickleball, archery, dance, etc.,” he said. “There’s a huge sports market there.”
It's just steps away from the convention center and hotels, and planning is almost complete.
“We're very close,” Hancock said. “All work by the architect, including interior reviews and safety checks, is expected to be completed by around March 18th.”
He said they would seek bids for construction work by the end of March.
There are seven basketball courts and the potential for 14 volleyball courts or 28 pickleball courts.
Also suitable for futsal and archery.
There will be a common area with concessions, space for coaches and officials, and a large wall at the entrance that will feature a mural.
They will be looking for a local artist to do the job.
Hancock said he also has a rough estimate of how much everything will cost.
“Currently, this project has an $18 million price tag,” he said. “With COVID-19 and construction prices, we can’t say anything, so we are very anxiously waiting for the bids to come in.”
