WELLSBURG — William Michael Traubert has declared his candidacy for a seat on the Brooke County Board of Education in the May 14 primary election.
Mr. Traubert retired after 46 years in the banking industry. He graduated from West Virginia Northern He Community College and Wheeling He graduated from Jesuit College, and he is working toward a master's degree in education at Liberty University.
He has served on the Hancock Brook Ohio Victim Assistance Program Board of Directors for more than 30 years, many of them as Chairman.
Traubert has been with USA Boxing for more than 50 years, serving as a regional coach for the Junior Olympics and a certified inspector for championship fights overseen by the West Virginia State Athletic Commission.
Traubert said he was disappointed to see a slight drop in state test reading scores for Brooke County students in 2021.
“I know great educators are working to correct that drop.” He added that if elected, he would push for higher reading scores than the state average by emphasizing vocabulary building, critical thinking and using context cues.
“We need to strengthen our compassion skills and empathy when working with students with challenges.” That specifically includes people with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, he said.
Traubert said he recommends getting kids involved in sports and other activities that require both the left and right brain to work together, or what some people call behavioral patterns. “Cross the midline”
She said crossing the midline can be difficult for such children, and similar activities can also be used to evaluate additional instruction in early childhood.
