CAIRO – Namibia's President Hage Geingob died on Sunday while undergoing treatment, the presidential palace announced.
In a post on social media platform He said he died surrounded by his children.
Geingob was undergoing treatment for cancer. The 82-year-old man underwent a colonoscopy and gastroscopy on January 8, followed by a biopsy, his office announced last month.
In the same post, Namibia's acting president Angolo Mbumba appealed for calm, saying: “A cabinet meeting will be convened immediately to make the necessary national arrangements in this regard.”
Geingob, who had served as president of the southern African country since 2015, was due to complete his second and final term this year. In 2014, he said he had survived prostate cancer.
Namibia plans to hold elections to choose new leaders in November.
