Young girls who play hockey got the chance to share the ice with other girls on Monday as part of Hockey Winnipeg's Women's Hockey Day.
Girls playing in the U7 House League and First Shift U12 programs can sign up for an hour of skating at the Hockey for All Center, where they can mingle with other girls and receive instruction from female coaches. Ta.
“Giving young women the opportunity to play together on the ice with people their own age and people like them. It's all about inclusivity and diversity and just having fun and getting into the game at a young age.” It's just about getting them involved and letting them do what they want to do to stay in the game longer,'' said Savannah Rennie, Hockey Winnipeg's grassroots coordinator.
Renee said hosting events like this is important because it gives girls the chance to make friends with other girls and develop and grow in a safe environment.
“The sport of hockey has brought so many opportunities to my life, not just my athleticism on the ice, but the connections and friends I have made and the way I see the world off the ice.”
Renee knows more girls want to take up the sport of hockey. Some of them do it to enjoy sports, while others do it to compete in high-level competitions.
Seeing women play at a professional level in the PWHL also piques the interest of more girls who want to be like them when they grow up.
“For these kids on the ice, it’s something to respect and, honestly, to be inspired by when you turn on the TV and see professional hockey players on the screen. It's great for a player to play every game.''It's great that he's doing it as a job, just like the men. ”
Rennie said there were lots of smiles and the players were already starting to make friends with others in their short time together.
