Blockchain analysts are sounding the alarm about a new attack vector in which malicious parties contaminate addresses with real cryptocurrencies.
Analysts at Cybers have issued a warning about a newly identified phishing scam targeting crypto users, particularly those dealing with Ethereum (ETH).according to ×post On February 15th, malicious attackers began sending genuine ETH in an attempt to deceive potential victims in what appears to be a new evolution of the traditional concept of address poisoning attacks.
This tactic relies on users accidentally copying fraudulent addresses and is similar to the concept of address poisoning. Cybers warns that in addition to sending real ETH, scammers may also use fake Tether (USDT) transactions to further lure unsuspecting individuals. If you fall prey to this scam, your funds will be transferred to a fraudulent address, resulting in financial loss.
Of particular concern is the widespread scope of this attack. Decentralized ETH has been detected across hundreds of different addresses, indicating a concerted effort to attack a large number of addresses within the cryptocurrency ecosystem.At the time of writing, at least one victim suffered Address poisoning of this new variant resulted in a total loss of $47,600.
The warning comes amid an alarming trend known as address poisoning that has recently gained attention in the cryptocurrency market. Address poisoning involves malicious actors manipulating legitimate transactions or generating fake transactions to trick users into sending funds to a fraudulent address.
The emergence of address poisoning as a prominent threat in the crypto space was highlighted by MetaMask developers in January 2023. Since then, this tactic has continued to evolve and poses significant risks to unsuspecting users.
