ATLANTA — “Diet weed” is a phrase used to describe Delta-8 products, which are often synthetic reproductions of compounds found in cannabis. Users of Delta-8, which first became popular following the 2018 Farm Bill that allowed the sale of hemp, report improved sleep, anxiety, and pain without the intoxicating effects often associated with marijuana.
However, doctors are quick to point out that it is difficult to quantify the health effects of consuming Delta-8 products. There hasn't been enough extensive medical research on this product for doctors to fully understand how it works. CNN reported last week that Delta 8 remains potentially dangerous.
The National Poison Center says calls related to Delta-8 products have skyrocketed in recent years. The organization even referred to delta-8 THC as one of the “emerging public health threats.”
“In 2022, poison centers managed 3,358 delta-8 THC exposures, an 82 percent increase from 2021,” the organization reported. “This shows that the use and popularity of Delta-8 THC products is increasing. Delta-8 THC products are found in gummies, chocolates, candies, cookies, e-cigarette cartridges, infused drinks, and even breakfast cereals. It is available in a variety of forms.”
The American Poison Center is not the only organization speaking out. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a statement in 2022 calling attention to the lack of regulation regarding Delta-8 products.
“It is important for consumers to be aware that delta-8 THC products have not been evaluated or approved by the FDA for safe use under any circumstances,” the FDA reported. “They can be sold in a way that endangers public health and should be kept out of the reach of children and pets in particular.”
As of November 2023, at least 17 states (including Washington state) have banned Delta-8 products, and seven others have “severely restricted” Delta-8 products. However, the National Cannabis Industry Association said the product can still be seen openly sold in convenience stores even in states where it is banned.
