Business is picking up on the PGA Tour this week as the league's best players converge on TPC Sawgrass for the 2024 Players Championship. Following the commemorative event that got the PGA Tour back on track after a slow start to the season, its most notable sponsored tournament is taking place just one month before the major season begins with the 2024 Masters.
Scottie Scheffler, who won last week's Arnold Palmer Invitational and is the reigning Players Champion, was the proper favorite and sat in a good position after the first round. Rory McIlroy went 22-1 in the field, sitting just behind Scheffler as the only player to sit at the top of the leaderboard through the first 18 holes. There was only one person.McIlroy also tied the TPC Sawgrass record. 10 birdies in the first round.
Other than Jon Rahm and 2022 champion Cameron Smith, who have both left the league, Tiger Woods is the most notable absentee from the field this week. It was a bit of a surprise that Woods didn't commit to The Players, especially considering it was his last year of automatic eligibility. Tiger claims he wants to play at least once a month in 2024, and he expects to suit up in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., after missing the Genesis Invitational due to an alleged illness (not injury-related). I was worried. Instead, it looks like Woods may play just 1.5 rounds of competition this year before heading to Augusta National for the Masters.
