Congratulations to College of Nursing Dean Butch De Castro on being inducted into the Washington State Nurses Hall of Fame by the Washington State Nursing Association (WSNA).
“Being selected to the Washington State Nurses Hall of Fame is beyond anything I could have dreamed of for my career,” said Dr. De Castro, MSN/MPH, RN, FAAN. “While I know, admire, and respect many previous Hall of Fame inductees, I am deeply humbled to think that my efforts and pursuits compare to theirs and deserve similar respect. In addition to Dean de Castro, College of Nursing Professor Emeritus Katherine Camacho Carr, Ph.D., ARNP, CNM, FACNM, FAAN, will also be inducted at the March 21 ceremony. Camacho Carr became one of the first certified nurse midwives (CNMs). As a professor, she has educated hundreds of nurse and nurse-midwifery graduate students and advocated for advances in nurse-midwifery and nurse practice.
Established in 1996, the WSNA Hall of Fame recognizes “pioneering nurses at the pinnacle of excellence who have transformed nursing practice, research, educational opportunities, and administrative policies” in Washington state.
Dean de Castro, who serves on the King County Board of Health, utilizes a community engagement approach to research and education grounded in a health equity and social determinants framework. He says being inducted into the Hall of Fame alongside Camacho-Carr speaks to the academic excellence and high professional standards of the university as a whole, and Camacho-Carr's progress in the field of nursing and midwifery in particular.
De Castro says: Camacho Carr is dedicated to educating and mentoring Seattle University's many nursing students, launching the University's nursing midwifery program, and helping to advance the practice of nursing midwifery and nursing practice locally and globally. and has made significant contributions to nursing. ”
The Nursing Hall of Fame induction further inspired De Castro to “work more decisively for nurses and the people they serve across Washington state and beyond.”
